Our Town

The Town Crest

The Kensington Crest is easily dismissed as being bizarre at an initial glance. Many people do not realize that each element of the Town Crest has important symbolicTown Crest meaning. The Kensington Town Crest is composed of a red cross on a white field, together with a sword. The cross and the sword are elements taken from the arms of London. The cross may also refer to Kensington's one-time name of "Barrett's Cross", a name that had been adopted in 1824. In the centre there is a potato blossom to signify the major crop and also to symbolize the fact that Kensington is the heart of the agricultural district. The Canadian Civic Crown is, of course, composed of a civic crown, but with the additional element of maple leaves. Issuing out of the civic crown is a lobster, alluding to the importance of the lobster and fishing industry to Kensington. The main tinctures of the arms are red and white, which have been adopted as the Town's official colours.
