Police Chaplain

Kensington Police Service is undergoing a re-organization. This includes administrative, personnel and culture changes that will be reflected in the greater Kensington community. The volunteer services of a Police Chaplain serve to enhance the overall goals, integrity and professionalism of the Service. The police chaplaincy program will be semi-formal, with some adopted principles and guidelines. The Police Chaplain will serve members of the Kensington Police Service and, in the course of their duties, clients of the Police Service. He/she may do 'ride-a-longs' with officers, offer counselling when requested, pastoral visiting associated with the Police Service, assist officers with death notifications or other traumatic events, assist with Critical Incident Stress Management debriefings and generally provide opportunities for personal and professional health and growth within the Service. The Chaplaincy program demonstrates that policing is more than complaint-driven response by officers and that an integrated approach is being taken in this community. The Police Chaplain is appointed by the Chief of Police and would enjoy selected privileges as a non- sworn volunteer member of the Kensington Police Service. Reverend Al Meloche of Kensington has been appointed as Police Chaplain for a one year volunteer term, effective February 15, 2005.

Youth

Kensington police are taking the initiative in listening to youth and trying to understand their concerns and needs. As part of an overall goal to increase police visibility and communication in the community, police have started a process with youth that includes: setting up a series of meetings with interested youth, meetings with an adhoc group that is being widened to include professional adults and local youth, determining and developing support in the community and from local leaders and business. A new non-profit entity called 'Kensington Community Development Inc. has been formed to facilitate fundraising and organization under a provisional board of directors. Police, in consultation/ cooperation with all of the community partners, are exploring the concept and construction of a small youth drop-in that may be located in Kensington. Police officers are hoping that this and other related projects will help to bridge the gap with youth. We welcome your thoughts & ideas!

Seniors

Kensington police value the role of Seniors in our community! We would like to hear from you on what is important to Seniors and how we can improve our service to you. Please write or call and watch for updates on this site. Several new initiatives are being planned, including: Retired Seniors In Policing (RSVP) ... part of a volunteer program being set up to help integrate police & community and to benefit from the knowledge and skills of Senior Citizens. Seniors (over 55 years of age) may submit their name for a security check to be considered for a volunteer position, receive a weekend orientation session and then casually assist police with business security checks, Senior shut-in checks, ambassador role with tourists, special events and other important duties as their time permits.
